Phone ownership is significant among women, with 88% of female respondents claiming to own at least one phone. The gender gap in mobile money usage is quite small - only 5%. However, it is slightly more pronounced in rural areas (9%), than in urban areas (5%). By contrast, in IDP camps, more women have subscribed to mobile money than men (72% compared to 71%). The gender gap is bigger in banking penetration compared to mobile money, being at 8%, which would tend to prove that mobile money is progressively closing finance gender gaps in Somalia.
